MDX Forum: National AI Compute Exchange planned for Q1 2027 to widen access

Malaysia plans to launch a National AI Compute Exchange in the first quarter of 2027 to make compute more affordable, an MDEC official told the MDX Forum 2026 in a report by The Edge on 29 September. The forum, which drew about 300 representatives, focused on what Malaysia can build on top of its data centre investments.

Key points

  • MDEC's Muhammad Hafiz Wan Rosli said Malaysia has about RM385 billion in data centre related investment, yet only 38% of enterprises have adopted AI.
  • The exchange will be a centralised marketplace that pools demand, connects users with several compute providers and negotiates scaled prices.
  • Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said a fully operational data centre employs a few dozen people, while an AI services industry employs thousands.
  • AI, data centre and cloud, and global business services firms made up nearly 70% of the 119 companies newly approved for Malaysia Digital status in the second quarter of 2026.

Why it matters for Malaysia

The gap between heavy infrastructure spending and modest enterprise adoption is now the government's stated problem. A shared compute market is one direct attempt to close it for smaller users, though it has yet to launch.

Questions answered

What is the National AI Compute Exchange?
It is a planned centralised marketplace that will aggregate demand, connect users with multiple compute providers and negotiate competitive prices. It is aimed at smaller businesses, startups, students and researchers, and is scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2027.
Why does Malaysia need it if it has so many data centres?
MDEC's Muhammad Hafiz Wan Rosli said only 38% of Malaysian enterprises have adopted AI despite about RM385 billion in data centre related investment. He said the main barrier is affordable access to compute, not infrastructure capacity.
